1 Thessalonians 4:12-18

1 Thess 4:12

That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without.

Paul reminds us here of the importance of a Believers Testimony.

The without here refers to unsaved people WITHOUT Christ
who will be closely observing the believer.

The following points are important.

1) The Believer in their Testimony

should be sincere — Not a Hypocrite.

2) The Believer in their Testimony

should be honest in all their dealings

— Financial; Relationship; *** and in their walk with God.

3) The Believer in their Testimony

is to walk properly in the presence of outsiders.

4) The Believer in their Testimony

is to so walk that they win the respect of outsiders.

1 Thess 4:12b And that ye may have lack of nothing.

Paul reminds us here of the importance of being a good workman.

1) A good workman for Christ

will not be in any need of the everyday basics.

2) A good workman in Christ

will not be dependent on anyone apart from God.

3) A good workman in Christ

will be self supporting with the blessings of God and endeavour

*** never to be a burden on others.

1 Thess 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant.

Paul now begins a great teaching on the subject of our Lord’s return.

This is a rather short section until the end of the chapter but it contains immense truth.

Many of the early Thessalonians were concerned about the position and status of those believers who had already died and Paul seeks to both reassure them and comfort them.

Being ignorant of scripture teaching is the number one reason why all sorts of strange doctrines have arisen and so many Christians seem not to know what they believe or indeed lack in their walk and have no victory.

1) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers to be Fretful and Anxious.

2) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers

to have No Confidence in tackling false teachers.

3) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers

to have Mental Health Problems.

Page 2)

4) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers never to go Soul Winning.

5) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers

to lack Boldness and Confidence.

6) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers to be Disqualified

from positions of service which *** God may be calling them to.

7) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers

NOT to be standing on the Promises of God.

8) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers to be Doubters.

9) Ignorance of the Scripture causes Believers to be Backsliders.

1 Thess 4:13 Concerning them which are asleep.

A reference here to Believers who had already died in Christ.

1 Thess 4:13 That ye sorrow not.

Sorrow concerning someone Who is a Genuine Christian dying

in many ways is unfounded

— It would be expected from the pagan who has no hope

— But not from the Believer who should be aware of the great

truths of the resurrection and hope in the Bible.

(Jer 16:5) (Eze 24:16) (Jer 22:10) (Psalm 116:15) (Rev 14:13) (Phil 1:21)

(Isa 57:1) (2 Cor 5:8) (Psalm 49:15) (Prov 14:32) (1 Cor 15:51)

(2 Cor 5:1-3)

1 Thess 4:13 Even as others which have no hope.

(Eph 2:12) (Job 8:13) (Job 11:20) (Prov 10:28) (Job 27:8) (Prov 11:7)

(Prov 11:23) (Prov 26:12)

1 Thess 4:14a For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again.

A few interesting observation about this statement of Paul.

1) Notice here the choice to believe or not to believe. (IF)

(John 5:47) (John 8:24) (Rom 4:24) (2 Tim 2:13)

2) Notice the person someone has to believe in (JESUS)

Page 3)

3) Notice the necessary requirement of belief concerning the Person of Christ

— That He DIED

And that He ROSE AGAIN.

a) The fact of Christ’s death.

(Phil 2:8) (Matt 27:50) (John 19:30) (John 19:33) (1 Peter 3:18)

b) The fact of Christ’s Resurrection.

(Acts 25:19) (Rom 8:34) (Rev 1:18) (Rev 2:8) (1 Cor 15:3-9)

1 Thess 4:14b

Even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.

The end of verses 14 contains a very important statement

and it is equally important that it should be understood correctly.

Some wrongly use this phrase to try and deny a Pre-Tribulation Rapture.

However reading it in the context of the rest of the book of 1 Thess the end of verse 14 actually adds weight to the TRUTH of a Pre-Tribulation Rapture.

*** PAUL IS TEACHING HERE THAT THE SOULS OF DEPARTED BELIEVERS WILL COME WITH JESUS AT THE RAPTURE TO RECEIVE THEIR ETERNAL, RESURRECTION BODIES FROM GOD ***

1 Thess 4:15a For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord

(Gen 15:4) (1 Sam 15:10) (2 Sam 7:4) (2 Sam 24:11) (1 Kings 6:11)

(1 Kings 21:17) (2 Chron 11:2) (Isa 38:4) (Jonah 1:1) (Haggai 1:3)

(Zech 7:8)

1 Thess 4:15b

That we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord

Many Believers will be alive at Christ’s coming for them

— God’s desire is that they would be faithful at this point and that they are making a sacrifice for Jesus particularly in the way of soul winning.

The living believers at Christ’s coming do NOT go to meet Jesus before those Believers who are sleeping

1 Thess 4:16 The Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven.

Heaven is a place and it is from Heaven that Jesus comes for His Bride

— The Church.

1 Thess 4:16 With a shout.

(Psalm 47:5) (Jer 25:30)

1 Thess 4:16 With the Voice of the Archangel

(Jude 9:1)

1 Thess 4:16 And with the Trump of God.

In scripture there are many instances of trumpets being used in varying circumstances.

1) There is the Last Trumpet.

(Ex 19:16) (1 Cor 15:51-52) (Rev 11:15-19)

2) There are the Trumpets for Battle.

(1 Cor 14:8) (Num 10:9) (Zeph 1:16) (Jer 4:19) (Zech 9:14)

3) There are the Trumpets for Celebration.

(Num 29:1) (Joel 2:15) (2 Sam 6:15) (Psalm 47:5) (2 Kings 9:13)

4) There are Trumpets for signalling.

(Rev 1:10) (Ex 19:16) (Ex 19:19) (Heb 12:19)

5) There are the Trumpets to signal Stop Fighting.

(1 Sam 2:28) (2 Sam 18:16) (2 Sam 20:22).

1Thess 4:16 And the dead in Christ shall rise FIRST

Although Paul states the ORDER of the Saints Resurrection in

verses 16 & 17 of chapter 4 this is of interest

but not as important as the FACT of the Resurrection for the Saints.

(1 Cor 15:22) (Psalm 71:20) (Hosea 13:14) (Acts 24:15) (John 11:25)

(John 6:40) (Psalm 49:15) (2 Corinthians 4:14) (John 5:25)

1 Thess 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain

shall be caught up together with them in the clouds

Page 5)

1Thess 4:17 To meet the Lord in the air.

A moment which no amount of words are adequate

— Ushered Immediately into the Presence of the Lord.

(Luke 23:43) (John 14:3) (John 17:24) (2 Corinthians 5:8) (Phil 1:23)

(1 Cor 15:51) (Psalm 116:15)

1 Thess 4:17 And so shall we ever be with the Lord.

A Number of important theologies in this verse.

a) This verse teaches the plurality of Believers. (WE)

b) This verse teaches Eternity.

c) This verse teaches who Believers will be with for Eternity (THE LORD)

1 Thess 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words

(Isaiah 40:1-2) (Luke 21:28) (1 Thess 5:11)

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE

The Rapture of the church should not stand alone on 1 Thess 4:13-18.

It must be supported with other scripture.

The following can be helpful.

a) (Psalm 45:14-16) (Song of Solomon 1:4) (Song of Solomon 2:10)

(Isaiah 26:20) (Matt 3:12) (Matt 13:30) (1 Corinthians 15:50-55)

(Phil 3:20-21) (John 14:1-3) (1 Thess 1:10) (Titus 2:13) (1 John 3:2-3)

(2 Corinthians 5:10)

Some verses which appear to teach a Pre-Tribulation Rapture.

(Revelation 3:10) (1 Thess 1:10) (Romans 5:9)

The Fact That The Church Is Not Mentioned As Being On Earth In The Book Of Revelation Between Chapters 4-19 Is Often Taken To Support A Pre-Tribulation Rapture

— The Come Up Hither In Revelation 4:1 Is Often Taken To Mean The Rapture Of The Church.
