1 Thessalonians 2:16-19

Introduction:

In this lesson we will examine closely the final 4 verses of 1 Thess 2:

1 Thess 2:16: Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles:

“Everywhere in the New Testament

we find people attempting to block the word of God”

(Acts 11:2) (Acts 13:45) (Acts 13:50) (Acts 14:2) (Acts 14:19) (Acts 17:5-6)

(Acts 17:13) (Acts 18:12) (Acts 19:9) (Acts 21:27-31) (Acts 22:21-22)

1 Thess 2:16: That they might be saved:

“The end result of all Bible preaching should be to see people saved”

(Isaiah 45:22) (Mark 16:16) (Acts 4:12) (Rom 10:13-15) (1 Tim 2:4)

The thought of being saved is twofold in the scriptures:

1) Sometimes being saved refers to PHYSICAL RESCUE AND DELIVERANCE:

(Ex 14:30-13) (Num 10:9) (Deut 33:29) (1 Sam 14:23) (2 Sam 22:4)

(1 Chron 11:14) (2 Chron 32:22) (Psalm 18:3) (Psalm 34:6) (Psalm 44:7)

(Psalm 106:8) (Psalm 107:13) (Isaiah 63:9) (Jeremiah 23:6)

(Matt 10:22) (Mark 13:13) (Acts 27:20)

2) Sometimes the thought of being saved refers to SPIRITUAL SALVATION:

(Luke 7:50) (Luke 8:12) (Luke 13:23) (Luke 18:42) (John 3:17)

(John 5:34) (John 10:9) (Acts 2:21) (Acts 2:47) (Acts 11:14) (Acts 15:11)

(Acts 16:30-31) (Rom 5:9-10) (Rom 9:27) (1 Cor 1:18) (1 Cor 10:33)

(Eph 2:5) (Eph 2:8) (2 Tim 1:9) (Titus 3:5) (Rev 21:24)

1 Thess 2:16 To fill up their sins alway.

“The thought here is unless the Gentiles get saved

they will constantly be adding to their sins

(Psalm 38:4) (Ezra 9:6) (Psalm 40:12)

(Page 2)

1 Thess 2:16: For the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

“The thought here is that if the Gentiles do not get saved

God’s wrath is not only upon them NOW, but will be upon them

in completeness in the future and in fact forevermore”

Several sub subjects are brought into Paul’s teaching here:

1) Paul teaches God’s Wrath is a fact and certainly exists.

There are a number of instances where God is angry in the Bible

with INDIVIDUALS but also NATIONS.

(Psalm 56:7) (Psalm 59:13) (Psalm 69:24) (Isaiah 34:2) (Isaiah 63:6)

(Hab 3:12) (Psalm 79:6) (Psalm 2:5) (Psalm 78:49) (Ex 15:7)

(Jer 10:25) (Isaiah 66:15) (Eze 25:14) (Zephaniah 3:8) (Mal 1:4)

2) Paul teaches along with others in the scriptures that God’s Wrath

is upon people NOW even in this life if they do not believe.

(John 3:36) (John 3:18) (Romans 2:8) (Eph 5:6) (2 Kings 22:13)

(Romans 1:18)

3) Paul teaches along with others in the scriptures that God’s Wrath

upon the Unsaved is Justified; will be Complete and will be Forever.

The word uttermost in 1 Thess 2:16 indicates this pattern

of completeness and forever.

(Psalm 92:7) (2 Thess 1:7-9) (Jude 1:7) (Daniel 12:2) (Mal 1:4)

(Matt 18:8) (Heb 6:2) (Rev 14:11) (Rev 19:3) (Rev 20:10)

(Matt 25:41) (Matt 25:46) (Mark 9:44-48) (Matt 12:32)

1 Thess 2:17: But, we brethren

“Paul gives fellow believers here a title — BRETHREN

This is one of many names and titles

given to genuine believers throughout scripture”

1) Believers are called the TEMPLE OF GOD. (1 Cor 3:16-17)

(Luke 9:3)

1 Thess 2:19: This verse is primarily teaching that souls won

are a crown of rejoicing.
