(Page 1)

TEACHING ONE:

Ezekiel and the Boiling Pot

Ezekiel 24:1-14

This prophecy is primarily a prophecy which was given to Ezekiel concerning the coming Judgement of God upon Jerusalem. The reason for this prophecy was threefold.

1) JERUSALEM’S — FILTHINESS. (Eze 24:13)

2) JERUSALEM’S — REFUSAL TO GET RIGHT WITH GOD. (Eze 24:13)

3) JERUSALEM’S — GENERAL REBELLION. (Eze 24:3)

A) The Method Of Warning:

1) Ezekiel was to take a pot with water in it. (Eze 24:3)

2) Ezekiel was to place pieces into the pot. (Eze 24:4-5)

“The bones in the Pot were to represent the inhabitants of the city of Jerusalem

— Even those who were apparently good were to be included

— NO ONE was to be excluded”

3) Ezekiel was to build a fire under the Pot. (Eze 24:9-10)

“This represents the great army of Babylon besieging the City”

4) Ezekiel was to build a fire WHICH WAS SO GREAT AND HOT that it would even burn and become molten. (Eze 24:11)

“Remembering that throughout the scripture

BRASS is often a picture of God’s Judgement and Cleansing”

5) Ezekiel was told that God’s Judgement on this occasion was Final.

(Eze 24:14)

“When God says something

— It will happen and it is irreversible”

*** Verse 14 is a very powerful verse

concerning God’s intent and certainty ***

(Num 23:19) (1 Sam 15:29) (Psa 33:9) (Isa 55:11) (Jer 23:20)

TEACHING TWO:

Ezekiel and The Pantomime of No Mourning

Ezekiel 24:15-27

Ezekiel received the word of the Lord. (Eze 24:15)

2) Ezekiel was told that the Desire of his eyes would be taken away.

(Eze 24:16)

3) Ezekiel was commanded Not to mourn or Weep. (Eze 24:16)

(Page 2)

4) Ezekiel was commanded not to show any outward visible signs of Grieving. (Eze 24:17)

“Compare with Job when he lost family members”

5) Ezekiel’s wife Died. (Eze 24:18)

“Possibly of a Stroke” (See verse 16)

THE MEANING OF THE PANTOMIME OF NO MOURNING:

1) God will take away the TEMPLE The DESIRE OF ISRAEL’S EYES

(Eze 24:20-21)

2) God’s Judgement will be so swift and sharp

THAT THE NATION WILL BE TOO STUNNED TO MOURN.

** A Medical stroke generally is a sudden

and unexpected and unwelcome event **

3) God would Destroy many of Israel’s Sons and Daughters;

and yet there will be NO Mourning. (Eze 24:21)

Final Footnote:

Verse 27 is interesting

— It appears to refer back to Chapter 3 verses 25-27 where Ezekiel was commanded to remain silent before his fellow exiles except to pronounce the prophecies God gave to him. It appears that during his acting out the Pantomimes God made him Dumb; but after the Pantomime was completed his speech would return

— In other words he was SOMETIMES A PART TIME SPEAKING PROPHET AND SOMETIMES A PART TIME ACTING PROPHET which is quite unique in scripture over the time period in which he brought the message of God to God’s people.

THE TEST OF A TRUE PASTOR

EZEKIEL 34:1-16

TEACHING ONE: THE MARKS OF A BAD PASTOR

1) A Bad Pastor will Feed Themselves — But not their Flock.

(Eze 34:2) (Eze 34:8)

2) A Bad Pastor will live a Luxurious Lifestyle

— i.e. Will spend what he has on Himself

— Rather than God’s work / God’s people / God’s Missionaries.

(Eze 34:3)

3) A Bad Pastor will Not Comfort the Sick. (Eze 34:4)

4) A Bad Pastor WILL NOT DEAL with those who are Broken. (Eze 34:4)

“He will avoid working with Alcoholics / Drug Addicts / Prostitutes.”

(Page 3)

5) A Bad Pastor will NOT BE REGULARLY SOUL WINNING:

(Eze 34:4) “Neither have ye sought the lost”

(Eze 34:6) “And none did search or seek after them”

(Eze 34:8) “Neither did my Shepherds search for my Flock”

6) A Bad Pastor will Rule with Force. (Eze 34:4e)

7) A Bad Pastor will Cause God’s Flock to be Scattered. (Eze 34:5)

8) A Bad Pastor will Cause the Flock to Wander (Eze 34:6)

“This usually happens through lack of teaching

— If a Pastor is not feeding the Flock through lack of good teaching,

the Flock will eventually wander elsewhere

to receive nourishment from the word of God.”.

9) A Bad Pastor will have God Against Them. (Eze 34:10)

“They are accountable to God

and he will judge them as to their faithfulness”

**** I WILL REQUIRE MY FLOCK AT THEIR HAND ****

10) A Bad Pastor will be REPLACED BY GOD (Eze 34:10)

“For I will deliver my flock from their mouth,

that they may not be meat for them”

TEACHING TWO: THE MARKS OF A GOOD PASTOR

This section informs us as to how God deals with His sheep;

and this is very helpful because the Pastor of a Church

should be dealing with God’s people in exactly the same way.

Note the following points:

1) A Good Pastor KNOWS HIS SHEEP: (Eze 34:11)

“I will both search my sheep”

2) A Good Pastor IS A CONSISTENT SOUL WINNER: (Eze 34:11)

“And seek them out”

“I will seek that which was lost” (Eze 34:16)

(Page 4)

3) A Good Pastor will DELIVER HIS SHEEP FROM ERROR: (Eze 34:12)

“One of the main tasks of a Good Pastor is

to sort out wrong doctrine and teach correct doctrine”l

**** I WILL FEED THEM IN GOOD PASTURE **** (Eze 34:14)

4) A Good Pastor will TEACH HIS SHEEP

WISDOM / JUDGEMENT/ MORALITY

(Eze 34:16d)

“I will feed them with Judgement”

5) A Good Pastor will WORK AMONGST THE BROKEN: (Eze 34:16)

“And will bind up that which is Broken”

*** He will go into the Highways and Byeways

preaching the good news just as Christ did ****
