Ezekiel Chapter 8 (Ezekiel 8)

Introduction:

A meeting of significance was taking place

”The elders of Judah sat before me”

(Eze 8:1) (SEPT 17th 592 BC)

(Eze 20:1) (Eze 20:3) (Eze 14:1) (Joel 1:14) (Joel 2:16)

** A gathering such as this was often a time when leaders would inquire of the Lord **

Point 1: Ezekiel tells us that

the Hand of the Lord fell upon him at the meeting. (Eze 8:1b)

(Eze 3:14) (Eze 3:22) (Eze 33:22) (Eze 37:1) (Eze 40:1)

Point 2:
Ezekiel is supernaturally transported to Jerusalem in the visions of God.

a) Ezekiel sees a form that has an appearance of a man (Eze 8:2a)

b) Ezekiel says that man had what appeared to be fire from His waist down. (Eze 8:2b)

c) Ezekiel says that this man had what appeared to be something bright looking like the gleam of amber from His waist upwards. (Eze 8:2c)

Point 3: Ezekiel said that this man stretched out His hand

and took Ezekiel by the hair

and then the Spirit of God lifted Ezekiel up

between earth and Heaven. (Eze 8:3a)

(Eze 3:12) (Eze 11:24) (Eze 40:1-2) (Eze 43:5) (2 Kings 2:16)

(Acts 8:38-39) (Col 2:5) (2 Corinthians 12:1-4)

Point 4:
Ezekiel said that he (Ezekiel) was carried in visions of God to Jerusalem. (Eze 8:3b)

Point 5: Ezekiel said that he arrived supernaturally in Jerusalem

at the door of the inner gate which faces north. (Eze 8:3b)

Point 6: Ezekiel said this was the place where the offensive image (Statue)

which provokes Jealousy was situated. (Eze 8:3c)

(Deut 32:16) (Ex 20:5) (Deut 32:21) (Ex 34:14) (Deut 4:24)

(Deut 5:9) (Deut 6:15) (Joshua 24:19) (Psalm 78:58)

Point 7: Ezekiel said that he saw the Glory of the Lord again

the same Glory as he saw in chapter one in the plain. (Eze 8:4)

“Interesting to note that Ezekiel the God fearing man was still able to behold the Glory of the Lord despite the paganism of the statue of Jealousy” .

(Eze 3:22-23) (Eze 1:26-28) (Eze 10:4) (Eze 43:1-6) (Exodus 3:1-4)

(Page 2)

Point 8: Ezekiel was instructed to lift his eyes to the North

— When he did so he saw the image of jealousy at the entry to the gate of the altar. (Eze 8:5)

“The spiritual thought here is that images and idols can BLOCK the only gateway to God our Lord Jesus christ from a person’s spiritual vision”

(2 Corinthians 4:4)

Point 9:
Ezekiel is asked as to whether he (Ezekiel) sees or perhaps understands

what abomination is taking place in the House of the Lord

— Which is committed by the House of Israel. (Eze 8:6a)

Point 10: Ezekiel hears the words from Heaven

”That I should go far off from my Sanctuary” (Eze 8:6b)

*** This is an interesting statement because here God is saying to Ezekiel

that because of the abominations being carried out in His house

He (GOD)

  1. Must depart from His Sanctuary.
  2. Must go far from His Sanctuary.
  3. Must be driven from His Sanctuary

*** Important Note:

— For the Christian today we are the temple of the Holy Spirit

— But Idolatry can GRIEVE and QUENCH Him and in effect

drive Him away from us so He seems distant in our experience. ***

(Eph 4:30) (1 Thess 5:19)

Point 11:
Ezekiel is told that the image of the statue of jealousy is just the start

in fact he will see even greater abominations than these. (Eze 8:6c)

(Eze 23:14) (Eze 23:19) (Matt 24:12)

Point 12:
Ezekiel is now brought to the door of the court and sees a hole in the wall. (Eze 8:7).

Point 13:
Ezekiel is instructed to dig through the wall and when he had done so he saw a door. (Eze 8:8)

And what he was to view there was indeed shocking to the extreme.

(Isa 29:15) (Job 34:22) (Jer 23:24) (Amos 9:2-3)

“Here men were attempting to hide their secret sin behind closed doors
from God which of course is impossible”

Point 14:
Ezekiel is instructed to go in and view the abominations that men done

— What he sees here is going to be even greater than the abomination

of the statue of Jealousy which he saw earlier. (Eze 8:9)

(Page 3)

Point 15: Ezekiel went in as instructed and was confronted with: (Eze 8:10)

  1. Pictures of every form of crawling thing.
  2. Pictures of loathsome beasts.
  3. Pictures of all the Idols of the House of Israel carved upon the walls.

“All of these had become objects of worship for God’s people
and had replaced the one living God in their hearts and minds”

(Ez 20:4) (Rom 1:23)

Point 16: Ezekiel was able to see for himself

that many members of the leadership in Jerusalem

were completely spiritually bankrupt. (Eze 8:11a)

(2 Chron 26:16) (Jer 7:9)

Point 17: Ezekiel was able to see for himself

how the spiritually corrupt leadership

offered false worship to false gods. (Eze 8:11b)

Point 18: Ezekiel is reminded by God again that men

foolishly think they can sin in the dark.

And think they can escape the all seeing eye of God. (Eze 8:12)

(Isa 29:15) (Psalm 10:11) (Psalm 73:11) (Psalm 94:7-10) (John 3:19-20)

(Eph 5:2) (Gen 3:8) (Jos 7:21) (2 Kings 17:9) (Prov 28:13)

Point 19:
Ezekiel is told to turn again and he will see even greater abominations

than the Image of jealousy and the elders worshipping drawings of their idols. (Eze 8:13)

(Jer 9:3) (Eze 8:15) (2 Tim 3:13)

Point 20: Ezekiel is now brought to the north gate

and observes woman weeping over the false god Tammuz. (Eze 8:14)

“Tammuz was believed to be the god of fertility

— A nature god — An agriculture god”

*** Again this is a detestable practice in God’s eyes, made even worse
by the fact that this was taking place in the vicinity of the temple;
and committed by the women of the day ***

(Gen 3:6) (Isa 32:9) (Ecc 7:26)

Point 21: Ezekiel is told to turn yet again

and he will see even greater abominations than the image of jealousy;

than the 70 elders worshipping gods and idols which they had drawn;

and abominations even worse than the women weeping for the false god Tammuz.

(Eze 8:15)

(Page 4)

Point 22:
Ezekiel is now brought to the inner court of the Lord’s House. (Eze 8:16a)

(1 Kings 7:12) (Eze 10:3) (Eze 40:19) (Eze 40:28) (Eze 40:32)

(Eze 43:5) (Eze 44:17) (Eze 44:27)

Point 23: Ezekiel sees the door of the Temple of the Lord. (Eze 8:16b)

Point 24: Ezekiel sees between the porch and the altar 25 men

with their backs turned toward the Temple of the Lord. (Eze 8:16c).

(Jer 2:27) (2 Chron 29:6) (Jer 32:33)

Point 25: Ezekiel sees these 25 men with their faces facing east,

and as they do so they worshipped the sun towards the east.

(Eze 8:16d)

(Deut 4:19) (Deut 17:3) (2 Kings 21:3) (2 Chron 33:3) (2 Kings 17:16)

(Jer 8:2) (Acts 7:42)

Point 25: Ezekiel is told by God that for the most part

God’s people do not recognizethe seriousness of their idolatry

and just treat all of what they are doing very lightly. (Eze 8:17a)

(Eze 9:9)

Point 26: Ezekiel is told by God

that God’s people have allowed violence to fill the land.

“For they have filled the land with violence” (Eze 8:17b)

(Amos 3:10) (Micah 2:2) (Gen 6:13) (Jer 6:7) (Jer 20:8) (Eze 7:11)

(Micah 6:12) (Zep 1:9)

Point 27:
Ezekiel is told that God’s people “Put the branch to their nose” (Eze 8:17c)

*** The meaning of this phrase is

— That God’s people were putting branches before their noses and mouths

in a form of superstitious worship which was common place

in the pagan nations around them ***

Point 28:
Ezekiel is told God’s final verdict on all the previous activity
as this chapter draws to a close: (Eze 8:18)

  1. God will deal with His people in Fury and Wrath.
  2. God’s eye will not spare His people.
  3. God will not pity His people.
  4. God will not Listen to His people
    — No matter how loud they cry unto Him.
