EXPOSITORY SERMONS – PART 2

Introduction

In the previous lesson we were able to see the construction of the expository sermon as we applied principles to Galatians One; Amos Nine; Romans Five and Psalm One. We will be continuing to construct further outlines and sermons in due course. For now we need to ask the question:

HOW DOES THE PREACHER
FILL IN THE CONTENT?

Many preachers find difficulty with this. They struggle for many hours reading and researching for content to fill the spaces between the homiletical headings. They get concerned and worry when they struggle to FILL THE GAP so to speak. The following should be noted and employed.

1) Fill the Gap with BIBLE CONTENT

2) Fill the Gap with BIBLE CONTENT

3) Fill the Gap with BIBLE CONTENT

This is the answer to all of the preachers struggles. There really is no requirement to go outside of the Bible to fill the gap. The following are Bible materials which if chosen and used widely will not only make the preacher’s sermons much more Biblical it will also keep the message on track.

Bible materials to use are listed below.

1) Bible CROSS REFERENCES

2) BIBLE ILLUSTRATIONS

3) BIBLE MIRACLES

4) BIBLE BATTLES

5) BIBLE WISDOM

6) BIBLE PEOPLE (Both Wicked And Good)

FILLING THE CONTENT GAP
WITH BIBLE CROSS REFERENCES

This is probably both the most effective and Biblical way of filling the content gap between the preachers crisp and clear Expository Sermon Headings in the outline.

EXAMPLE ONE – EPHESIANS 1 Verses 1 to 5

Method

As on previous occasions the preacher reads the text before 20 times. The preacher then looks for key THEMES running throughout the passage and chooses these themes to be the basis of his crisp homiletical headings. As before further sub headings could be added if desired to make the message an even more in depth study of the passage. The following would be an example of an expository message on Ephesians 1 verses 1 to 5 filling in the gaps with just cross references alone. The cross references are then used in and of themselves as preaching springboards and platforms to speak about and communicate the correct sense of both the scripture and the preacher’s homiletical headings

ESSENTIAL NOTE

This type of expository teaching is probably the best and most useful. It means that every passage; paragraph; chapter; book of the Bible could be taught and preached in this fashion. The preacher would NEVER have any shortage of preaching material.

HOWEVER IT IS VITAL THAT THE CROSS REFERENCES CHOSEN TO FILL IN THE CONTENT ARE DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO THE TEXT BEING PREACHED – NO SPURIOUS CROSS REFERENCES SHOULD EVER BE USED OTHERWISE THIS DESTROYS THE WHOLE MEANING OF THE TEXT AND GETS THE PREACHER SIDE TRACKED.
